Dump truck load board Q&A
What are dump trucks?
A dump truck may also be known as a dumping truck, dump trailer, dumper trailer, dump lorry, dumper lorry or dumper.
A dump truck is a vehicle that has an end that can open and when tilted it spills the load using gravity to empty the load quickly. There are different sizes of dump trucks which cater for different load volumes from 6.5 tons to 14 tons.
They are used for transporting a range of loose materials such as gravel, sand, dirt, coal, asphalt and construction waste. They are primarily used by the construction industry to transport materials to and from sites as an efficient method of moving and unloading loose materials.
Why should you use a dump truck?
You should use a dump truck if you want to move loose materials that are safe to move in an open top vehicle. It allows you to load materials in the top of the truck using a digger or excavator on site easily.
They are suitable for a variety of loose materials which includes construction waste leaving the site and they are ideal for deliveries on site because they can quickly dump their loads where you need them such as asphalt, gravel, sand and dirt.
Many of these materials would only be delivered in a dump truck or on a trailer in large sacks that can be lifted off by a built-in crane on the trailer. Depending on the volume of loose materials you need, a dump truck can offer a more economical price for the volume of goods.
Do all dump truck load boards show rates?
Not all load boards show the rates for loads and for many of them there is a reason why. Many load boards have been created as a competitive platform for shippers to find carriers with competitively priced rates.
The carriers can find loads easily that match their needs and help fill their trucks, but they need to bid for the load and win it on many load boards. If the load board contained the rate for the load it wouldn’t encourage competition or result in the best rates for shippers.
Some load boards do provide assistance in working out load rates as they offer a rate calculator and historical rate information which can be used by both the carrier to calculate rates and the shipper or broker to help assess bids or quotes.
Which load board pays the most?
Generally, there isn’t any particular load board that would pay more than any of the others as the load boards themselves do not determine the rates for the loads. Rates are set in several different ways.
Some load boards display the rates and these rates are decided by the shipper or broker advertising the load, and carriers may still be able to negotiate the rate. Many of the load boards though are competitive style load boards that require carriers to bid or quote for the load which means the carrier decides what the rate is and how much they will be paid.
However, the load board does impact the price in a small way as many load boards charge a fee on loads won or a monthly subscription applies to access the load board. Therefore you should understand what charges or fees apply to use the load board and if any fees apply when you win a load so that you can factor this into your pricing.
Are there any restrictions around using a dump truck?
Dump trucks are only really suitable for loose materials that are being used for construction or landscaping as they are open top vehicles that are open to the elements, so they aren’t suitable for many other types of loads. The restrictions on the vehicles themselves are largely based on their size and what they can carry.
The volume of the load that a dump truck can take varies depending on the weight of materials being transported. The weight restrictions on the vehicles vary depending on the size of the truck, for example, the load weight limits varies from 6.5 tons for the smallest dump truck to 14 tons for the largest dump truck.
You also need to consider the size of a dump truck and whether this impacts where it can be driven as their size varies up to 20 feet long and 8.5 feet wide. When booking a dump truck you will need to factor in the weight of the load and any road restrictions on route.
And like other commercial vehicles, is subject to various federal, state, and local regulations. These regulations can vary widely but generally cover areas such as:
- Licensing: Operators of dump trucks typically need to have a commercial driver’s license (CDL), with specific endorsements depending on the vehicle’s size and the type of materials being transported.
- Weight Limits: There are federal weight limits for vehicles on interstate highways, and states may have their own limits for roads under their jurisdiction. Weight limits are crucial for dump trucks, as the materials they carry can be quite heavy.
- Safety Regulations: There are specific safety standards that must be met, including those related to the vehicle’s condition, securing loads, and transporting hazardous materials. The Department of Transportation (DOT) sets these standards, and they can include requirements for regular inspections and maintenance.
- Environmental Regulations: Depending on the type of material being transported, there might be environmental regulations to consider. For example, transporting certain types of waste may require special permits, and there are rules to prevent materials from spilling on roadways.
- Hours of Service: There are federal and sometimes state regulations governing how many hours a commercial driver can be on duty and behind the wheel, aimed at reducing driver fatigue.
- Insurance Requirements: Commercial vehicles, including dump trucks, are required to have insurance coverage that meets or exceeds federal and state minimums. This coverage includes liability insurance for bodily injury and property damage.
- Local Restrictions: Local municipalities may have their own restrictions or requirements for commercial vehicles, including dump trucks. This can include restrictions on routes that can be used by heavy vehicles, noise restrictions, and limitations on operating hours in residential areas.
- Special Permits: For certain operations, like oversized loads or hazardous materials, special permits may be required. These permits can have their own set of requirements and restrictions.
