The video above shows the top trending search term by state for each day in the United States from January 7th, 2010 all the way to July 5th, 2020. It’s interesting because it’s surprisingly rare for the top trending search term to be the same across all 50 states.
In terms of the data itself, V1 Analytics says:
The map shows the highest trending Google searches for every state. Trending searches from 2010 to 2020 were taken from Google’s annual Year in Search summary.
Google Trends provides weekly relative search interest for every search term, along with the interest by state. Using these two datasets for each term, we’re able to calculate the relative search interest for every state for a particular week. Linear interpolation was used to calculate the daily search interest.
It should however be noted that ‘trending search term’ and ‘top search terms’ are actually slightly different. Top search terms actually stay pretty consistent and consist of words such as Facebook, Youtube, Amazon, Gamil, etc. Whereas trending search terms come from Google Trends. You see the current trending terms here.
Visual Capitalist makes the very good point that:
It’s important to remember that trending searches are measured by the increase of traffic, not just the overall amount of searches. Therefore, in states where it wasn’t trending, the word “coronavirus” may have already been a popular search term for a while, so the keyword didn’t see a sudden spike in interest like it did in other places.
They also compiled a list of term that trended unanimously which include:
