Container and intermodal load board Q&A
What is a container load board?
A container load board is an online marketplace or platform that connects shippers with transportation providers. It primarily focuses on the shipment of large containers, which are typically used for international and domestic freight.
These platforms allow shippers to post their container loads that need to be transported, and carriers can then search these listings to find loads that match their route and equipment capabilities.
Similarly, carriers can post their available capacity or specific routes, allowing shippers to find transportation options that meet their shipping needs.
Container load boards are an essential tool in the logistics and freight industry because they provide a dynamic and flexible way for shippers and carriers to optimize their operations.
For shippers, it offers a way to find competitive shipping rates and reliable carriers. For carriers, it helps in maximizing the utilization of their assets by finding loads that fit their schedules and route preferences, thereby reducing empty miles.
These platforms may offer various features, including tracking, payment processing, and tools to facilitate communication and negotiation between shippers and carriers. They can cater to a wide range of container types and sizes, including standard containers, refrigerated containers, and special equipment for oversized cargo.
What is Intermodal Transportation?
Intermodal transportation refers to the movement of goods using two or more modes of transportation, such as rail, ship, and truck, within a single journey, without handling the freight itself when changing modes.
This method leverages the strengths of different transportation modes to achieve more efficient and cost-effective freight movement, often using standardized shipping containers or other types of units that can be easily transferred between ships, trains, and trucks.
The key benefits of intermodal transportation include:
- Cost Efficiency: Combining different modes of transport can reduce costs compared to relying on a single mode for the entire journey, especially over long distances.
- Environmental Benefits: It often includes the use of rail for long-distance hauls, which is more fuel-efficient and emits fewer greenhouse gases per ton-mile than road transportation.
- Flexibility and Scalability: Intermodal offers flexibility in choosing the most efficient and cost-effective transport modes and routes. It can easily be scaled up or down based on the volume of goods.
- Reliability: The use of multiple modes can enhance the reliability of supply chains by providing alternative routes and modes in case of disruptions in one mode.
- Safety and Security: The standardized containers used in intermodal transport are secure and reduce the risk of theft. Additionally, rail and ship transport have lower accident rates compared to road transport.
Intermodal transportation is facilitated by intermodal terminals or hubs, where goods are transferred between different modes.
These hubs are equipped with specialized equipment, such as cranes and forklifts, to efficiently move containers between trucks, trains, and ships. The process is streamlined by advanced logistics and tracking systems, ensuring that the transfer points minimize delay and handling costs, thereby maintaining the integrity of the cargo throughout its journey.
Why should you use a container or intermodal transportation?
Container units are a flexible form of transportation as they can carry a wide variety of loads including palletised loads and most types of cargo. They can be used to transport the goods of a single shipper or combined loads from two or more shippers for partial loads. The containers are fully enclosed with rigid walls, floor and roof to protect the contents and this makes them weatherproof as well.
One of the biggest advantages of containers is that they can be used in a variety of transportation options and moved easily between each mode of transportation. Due to the box design the containers can be easily stacked and placed on trailers, trains and ships for transportation.
Do all container and intermodal transportation load boards show rates?
Load boards are all different and vary in what they contain and display including the rates. Many load boards don’t tend to display the rates for the loads and this may be due to them encouraging competition for loads. A lot of the load boards have a bidding process for loads which wouldn’t work well if the rates were included for the loads as it would influence the bids for the loads.
Some of the load boards will support their users with calculating rates for loads which includes rate calculators and historical rate information. This type of information can be used to build rates for bids or help shippers to assess bids.
Which load board pays the most?
Every load board is different so assessing which might be the best for you can be difficult. Knowing which load board pays the most might be useful, although that is not straightforward as the load boards don’t determine the rates for the loads or how much a carrier can make on the load.
The rates are determined either by the shipper posting the rate on the load board or the carrier bidding or quoting for the load advertised. In both scenarios, the carrier can decide whether the load is profitable enough for them to go for it.
The impact that the load board can have on the rate is down to the charges or fees that apply to using the load board or the load won. Some load boards are free to use and others charge a monthly subscription or membership fee.
When a load is won some load boards charge a fee as a percentage or fixed amount as part of the rate or on top of the rate. Whatever the charge or fee structure of the load board you should understand what they are so you can factor these into your rates when going for a load.
Are there any restrictions around using a container and intermodal transportation?
There are only a few restrictions on using a container which include any size restrictions and some content restrictions. Depending on where your load is being shipped to there can be some restrictions on its content which can include highly flammable substances such as fireworks, fertilisers, solvents, cleaning products, nail varnish, oils, aerosols, and batteries amongst other items.
Containers tend to be most suited to larger loads unless the load is suitable for shared loads with other shipments. Containers come in a range of sizes which include lengths of 10, 20 or 40 feet, widths of 8 feet, and heights of 8 feet 6 inches or 9 feet 6 inches, so being able to fill the container is important so it offers the best value and this may be a factor in whether it is the most suitable option.
Delivery considerations should also be examined as the container will be transported on a large trailer which may have some restrictions on where it can go due to its size and length affecting its moveability.
If the container needs to be unloaded from the trailer the logistics of this also need considering.
